Tools used to assess the quality of peer review reports: a methodological systematic review Superchi, Cecilia; González Alastrué, José Antonio; Solà, Ivan; Cobo Valeri, Erik; Hren, Darko; Boutron, Isabelle Background A strong need exists for a validated tool that clearly defines peer review report quality in biomedical research, as it will allow evaluating interventions aimed at improving the peer review process in well-performed trials. We aim to identify and describe existing tools for assessing the quality of peer review reports in biomedical research. Methods We conducted a methodological systematic review by searching PubMed, EMBASE (via Ovid) and The Cochrane Methodology Register (via The Cochrane Library) as well as Google® for all reports in English describing a tool for assessing the quality of a peer review report in biomedical research. Data extraction was performed in duplicate using a standardized data extraction form. We extracted information on the structure, development and validation of each tool. We also identified quality components across tools using a systematic multi-step approach and we investigated quality domain similarities among tools by performing hierarchical, complete-linkage clustering analysis. Results We identified a total number of 24 tools: 23 scales and 1 checklist. Six tools consisted of a single item and 18 had several items ranging from 4 to 26. None of the tools reported a definition of ‘quality’. Only 1 tool described the scale development and 10 provided measures of validity and reliability. Five tools were used as an outcome in a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Moreover, we classified the quality components of the 18 tools with more than one item into 9 main quality domains and 11 subdomains. The tools contained from two to seven quality domains. Some domains and subdomains were considered in most tools such as the detailed/thorough (11/18) nature of reviewer’s comments. Others were rarely considered, such as whether or not the reviewer made comments on the statistical methods (1/18). Conclusion Several tools are available to assess the quality of peer review reports; however, the development and validation process is questionable and the concepts evaluated by these tools vary widely. The results from this study and from further investigations will inform the development of a new tool for assessing the quality of peer review reports in biomedical research.

HPLC, MALDI-TOF MS, and NMR analyses showed that mixtures composed from cyclic dimer up to heptamer were obtained almost quantitatively. Subsequently, these cycles were polymerized by ring opening polymerization (ROP) mediated by CALB to obtain semicrystalline polymers. In addition, we demonstrated that the polymers obtained from the ROP process could be transformed into cyclic oligomers in high yields using enzymatic cyclodepolymerization, thereby recycling the polymer in a circular biosynthetic path.

Antena Bi-banda con conformación de dos haces simultáneos para sistemas GNSS-R Onrubia Ibáñez, Raúl; Pascual Biosca, Daniel; Querol Borràs, Jorge; Hyuk, Park; Camps Carmona, Adriano José Global Navigation Satellite Systems – Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is a relatively new remote sensing technique that benefits from GNSS signals as signals of opportunity as a bistatic radar. These signals can be processed as a scatterometer by measuring the relative scattered power, as an altimeter by measuring the relative delay between the direct and the scattered signals, and as an unfocused Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with very short coherent integration times (typically a few millisecons). Wider bandwidth signals provide an opportunity to increase the performance of some GNSS reflectometry applications (i.e. altimetry). The Microwave Interferometric Reflectometer (MIR) is an instrument developed at UPC to compare different GNSS-R techniques, notably the conventional and interferometric ones, and assess the capabilities of these new signals and bands of the GPS and Galileo systems (L1/E1 and L5/E5). This paper describes the MIR beamforming system.

Tutorial on remote sensing using GNSS bistatic radar of opportunity Zavorotny, Valery U.; Gleason, Scott; Cardellach Galí, Estel; Camps Carmona, Adriano José In traditional GNSS applications, signals arriving at a receiver's antenna from nearby reflecting surfaces (multipath) interfere with the signals received directly from the satellites which can often result in a reduction of positioning accuracy. About two decades ago researchers produced an idea to use reflected GNSS signals for remote-sensing applications. In this new concept a GNSS transmitter together with a receiver capable of processing GNSS scattered signals of opportunity becomes bistatic radar. By properly processing the scattered signal, this system can be configured either as an altimeter, or a scatterometer allowing us to estimate such characteristics of land or ocean surface as height, roughness, or dielectric properties of the underlying media. From there, using various methods the geophysical parameters can be estimated such as mesoscale ocean topography, ocean surface winds, soil moisture, vegetation, snowpack, and sea ice. Depending on the platform of the GNSS receiver (stationary, airborne, or spaceborne), the capabilities of this technique and specific methods for processing of the reflected signals may vary. In this tutorial, we describe this new remotesensing technique, discuss some of the interesting results that have been already obtained, and give an overview of current and planned spacecraft missions.

Awditori a Ciutadella de Menorca Mercadal Moll, Sebastià El projecte es situa a l’illa de Menorca, concretament a la localitat de Ciutadella. Aquest petit poble ha anat creixent al llarg dels anys però algunes zones han quedat abandonades entremig de dos creixements diferents. El projecte es coloca en un d’aquest punts intentant resoldre i relligar dos punts, inutilitzats a dia d’avui. A més a més, es situa al costat d’un gran baluard, agafant-lo com a referència i creant un parc als seus peus. En aquest dificil context s’idea un edifici que reemplaça una antiga costa, recreant-la i convertint-la en un parc. Per devall d’aquest, es desemvolupa un edifici que respon a la funció d’auditori i a diversos programes associats a ell, com el de bar. Apart de l’ús principal, es pensa l’edifici com a ascensor, de manera que el desnivell resolt a través del parc de la coberta, també pugui ser recorregut per l’interior creant un vestíbul públic al nivell inferior. El tret més característic de l’edifici són les bigues de gran cantell i llum que aguanten la coberta, distribueixen el parc i donen entrades de llum a l’interior. S’ha triat un sistema de formigó armat per estar en concordància amb la materialitat exterior, molt marcada per la pedra. Així, l’edifici es converteix en un contenidor on la distribució interior passa totalement a un segon plà. Qualificació obtinguda: 10

Phenomenal deformations: affordance as a design tool to deal with subject-object complementarity in Architecture Zammataro, Andrea The production of knowledge related to the architectural project during the design phase mainly concerns the object in itself, while its relationship with occupants is an underrated factor for design success. This is due to the fact that architecture as a formal design field is naturally devoted to deal with the physical and geometric characteristics of the design object identified in unequivocal ways, while occupancy implies a degree of subjectivity and contingency which phenomenally deforms the object into its many manifestations. This paper analyses the concept of affordance by Gibson (1979) as a suitable tool to deal with occupancy in terms of subject-object complementarity because it addresses the ecological value of an object, i.e. its value in relation to a perceiving subject and not in itself. The first problems posed by the concept of affordance, hence, is how the subject can be identified given the variety of real occupants which interact with a certain environment. The common answer is to address only those aspects which are in common between all the subjects, i.e. the ones who define occupants as members of a species. At this level, indeed, occupants are natural subjects, which can only express basic needs to be met by sensorimotor activities, and for this reason a different approach considering the subject as culturally and also individually defined is needed in order to shift from an automatism of inhabitation to the self-determination of occupancy. Affordance must therefore be considered in a broader context going beyond sensorimotor activities and dealing also with upper cognitive faculties. However, an affordance related to a culturally-defined subject does not entail self-determination per se, since also cultural and individual schemes can be absorbed without the exercise of critique due to habituation. Activities driven by natural, cultural or individual schemes differ with regard to the interval they entail between the action received by the environment and subject's reaction. Indeed, more individuality is implied, longer the time needed to process data received from the environment. Time is here intended not as an extensive but as an intensive dimension. This means that it cannot be considered as a sum of instants, but an unitary event having a specific character. This is the concept of duration in Bergson, as opposed to spatialized time, and it also recalls Bakhtin's idea of chronotope. In the overall framework interweaving design activity and time through cognition, chronotopes can be useful in the definition of an affordance-based architectural approach. Indeed some chronotopes describing duration in its becoming are related to the contingent and direct relationship between the subject and his object which is expressed by the concept of affordance. The present paper aims at understanding how these contributions from cognitive sciences, literature, philosophy and semiotics can allow architects to improve affordance as a design tool starting from a review of the state of the art. At the end, some case studies from the past which address the question of a self-determined occupancy are proposed as exemplary of an affordance-based approach to architecture. Vertical ridge augmentation is the most challenging of all situations, and often requires the use of autologous bone grafting. However, autologous bone grafting induces morbidity, and the harvestable bone is limited in quantity. Alternatives to autologous bone grafting include bovine-bone-derived biomaterials, which provide good clinical results and synthetic bone substitutes that still fail to provide a reliable clinical outcome. Synthetic biomimetic calcium phosphate (SBCP) biomaterials, consisting of precipitated apatite crystals that resemble in composition and crystallinity to the mineral phase of bone, arise as alternatives to both bovine bone and the current sintered bone substitutes. This study aims to compare the vertical bone regeneration capacity of the SBCP (MimetikOss, Mimetis Biomaterials) with that of a deproteinized bovine bone matrix (DBBM, Bio-Oss®; Geistlich Biomaterials) on the calvaria of rats. To model vertical bone augmentation, hemispherical cups were filled with the two types of biomaterial granules and implanted onto the skull of rats, while empty cups were used as controls. After 4 and 8 weeks of healing, bone growth was determined by microcomputed tomography and histomorphometry. After 4 weeks of implantation, a significantly higher bone growth was found in the case of SBCP compared with DBBM and left empty controls. At 8 weeks, no statistically significant differences were found between the two bone substitutes. These results are promising since vertical bone regeneration was faster in the case of SBCP than for DBBM.

Fibronectin is an ECM protein commonly used for biomaterial functionalization. The use of fibronectin recombinant fragments is an attractive alternate to the use of full-length fibronectin because of the relatively low cost and facility of purification. However, it is necessary to combine more than one fragment, for example, the cell attachment site and the heparin binding II (HBII), either mixed or in one molecule, to obtain complete activity. In the present study, we proposed to install adhesion capacity to the HBII fragment by an RGD gain-of-function DNA mutation, retaining its cell differentiation capacity and thereby producing a small and very active protein fragment. The novel molecule, covalently immobilized onto titanium surfaces, maintained the growth factor-binding capacity and stimulated cell spreading, osteoblastic cell differentiation, and mineralization of human mesenchymal stem cells compared to the HBII native protein. These results highlight the potential capacity of gain-of-function DNA mutations in the design of novel molecules for the improvement of osseointegration properties of metallic implant surfaces.

Identidad, lugar y arquitectura. Reflexiones en torno a la relevancia de la mutua interacción en la construcción del espacio Sánchez Bajo, Jorge; Campos Calvo-Sotelo, Pablo Este artículo se presenta como una reflexión sobre la relación de la arquitectura con las identidades, tanto individuales y colectivas, de las personas que la habitan. Pero también como una reivindicación de la importancia que podría tener hoy en día. la identidad en el ejercicio del diseño y construcción de estos espacios por parte de los arquitectos. El texto asume como fundamento la reivindicación de la noción de lugar en la arquitectura, dada su estrecha relación con el concepto de identidad, puesto que la asociación de ésta a un lugar fijo es uno de los aspectos más importantes tenidos en cuenta en aportaciones históricas trascendentales, como el libro Utopía de Tomás Moro (1516). Partiendo de tal asunción, el trabajo añade a dicha reivindicación varios cuestionamientos muy importantes, puesto que existe actualmente un escenario de post-crisis en la situación socio-política y cultural. En tal escenario aparecen nuevas versiones de la crisis, que afectan a la representación política, la noción de nación y la relación con el lugar. No son ajenos a esta coyuntura los conceptos de lugar e identidad. En estos últimos, la Arquitectura no actúa como mera espectadora, pues incide en las situaciones de ruptura del espacio con el lugar, la pérdida del sentido de identidad en el espacio, la concepción de patrimonio asociado a lo arquitectónico, el concepto de espacio público como lugar de mediación o límite entre diferentes en los entornos habitados, el sentimiento de pertenencia, el desprecio de los valores de las arquitecturas populares, y por último, la escala humana en la Arquitectura, como ejemplos más importantes. El texto quiere aportar una reflexión sobre el papel de la Arquitectura como mediadora, a fin de analizar la sociedad a partir del espacio y el espacio a partir de la sociedad, con un nexo en común en el concepto de identidad. Atom Probe Tomography (APT) was used to obtain a direct evidence of chlor segregation and cobalt diffusion at the grain boundaries (GBs) of polycrystalline coatings deposited by moderate temperature chemical vapor deposition (MT-CVD) on a WC-Co cemented carbide substrate. Reasons behind segregations are discussed, and its effects are correlated to the micromechanical properties of Ti(C,N) and Zr(C,N). It is concluded that chlorine segregation is a relevant factor for explaining the low cohesive strength at the GBs of Ti(C,N) leading to intergranular failure during micro-compression testing, while its absence in Zr(C,N) along with Co diffusion contribute to grain boundary strengthening.

Autoproducción asistida en asentamiento autogestionado de Xalapa, Veracruz Prieto González, Sandra Irene; Colorado López, Carlos Misael El fenómeno de urbanización ocurrido en la mayoría de los países latinoamericanos en las últimas décadas ha elevado el porcentaje de población al doble cambiando radicalmente su distribución poblacional mediante la urbanización masiva de la población rural. En consecuencia, alrededor de un 40% de las áreas urbanas mayores de la región, se alojan en asentamientos precarios; los cuales en algunos países representan el 60% y más del total de la construcción urbana. Por su parte la alternativa que pudiéramos llamar popular o precaria bajo sus distintas modalidades y denominaciones (invasiones, favelas, barrios marginales, asentamientos irregulares) ha sido desde el punto de vista cuantitativo la opción que ha hecho posible el alojamiento de la mayoría de nuevos pobladores urbanos. Debido a estos procesos de migración la ciudad de Xalapa ha crecido con una rápida urbanización no planificada a través de barrios populares o marginales asentados en sus periferias, afectados por altas condiciones de marginalidad, carencia de infraestructura y equipamiento urbano, segregación y una notable exclusión social respecto al resto de la población. Desde el enfoque de autoproducción asistida se aborda la problemática de autoconstrucción espontánea en las periferias de la ciudad a través de dos propuestas arquitectónicas: (Casa Comunitaria y Vivienda Progresiva) de carácter público y privado con el objetivo de mitigar la vulnerabilidad de la autoconstrucción espontánea, generar identidad y arraigo social, fortalecer la cohesión social y ayudar a regenerar parte del tejido de la ciudad que ha sido afectado a causa de la exclusión social de asentamientos periféricos. In addition, we are interested in all the games of construction and semantic and exploratory coordination of the museum‐expo. More precisely, this work explores the main question how the exhibition operates, in order to unveil in a certain way the communication process and the regime of interactions (implied by this process) that is established between its actors, its objects, its entities, its spaces, its discourses, its relations, its situations, etc. in the instance of the visit?
