Edifici de l'Antiga Seu Portuària de Tarragona : passat, present i futur Cotillas Alés, Carles El present projecte té com a objectiu analitzar l'edifici de l'antiga Seu Portuària de Tarragona, que és un edifici construït entre els anys 1978 i 1980 i presenta singularitats estructurals i estètiques ja que pertany a l'estil arquitectònic conegut com Brutalista. En primer lloc es fa una breu introducció històrica per entendre el moment en que es va construir l'edifici, una de les èpoques més significatives de l'era moderna del nostre país , la Transició. La societat estava canviant a passes agegantades i tots els trets d'aquesta necessitat d'expressió formen part del context de l'edifici. Al tractar-se d'un edifici pertanyent al Port de Tarragona, es fa un explicació general de la tipologia de ports existents per evidenciar la rellevància de l'Autoritat Portuària en temes de gestió i econòmics del port. A continuació es fa una extensa explicació sobre el corrent arquitectònic indicant el seu origen, les característiques principals i algunes de les seves obres més diverses i significatives. Després es realitza una descripció dels mètodes de càlcul que s'empraven en l'època i la normativa vigent en el moment de la realització del projecte. Es fa una breu descripció de l'arquitecte i s'analitza, a trets generals, la influència rebuda per l'autor personificada en un dels arquitectes més influents de la segona meitat del segle XX. Com a part principal, es realitza l'anàlisi de l'edifici, des de la seva construcció fins a dia d'avui, a nivell arquitectònic i sobretot a nivell social, fruit del caràcter mediàtic que li atorga la seva singularitat estructural. Es realitza una comprovació de l'armat dels pilars de totes les plantes seguint les hipòtesis emprades al projecte. També es realitza el càlcul d'un mur que suporta el soterrani. Finalment, després de realitzar l’anàlisi de l’edifici, s’acaba fent un estudi de l’impacte ambiental i el pressupost del projecte.

The company with annual sales of over 1.6 billion SEK (US$ 192 million) has some 800 employees worldwide. TitanX is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden and has manufacturing sites in Sweden, USA, Brazil, China and Mexico. Its manufacturing facilities are designed and operated with a strong and continuous application of lean manufacturing principles, and they perceive themselves as a very flexible supplier. The production sites have a high level of vertical integration, including the manufacturing of key critical components to ensure the highest quality results. The production operations are continuously adjusted to meet variations in customer demand. The vision is to be the number one global supplier of powertrain cooling solutions to the commercial vehicle industry. The facility in Sölvesborg consists of three zones; a raw material warehouse, a shop floor, and a finished goods warehouse. TitanX generally keeps high inventory levels of raw material and finished goods. An important reason for this is the marketing strategy to increase the current market share above 30% of the independent aftermarket for truck engine cooling systems. Therefore, high customer service levels and high efficiency are key performance measures that drive high capacity and stock levels.

Network modelling of cooling of hydro-generators Cabré Gimeno, Marc Air-cooling is the most common way of cooling large generators like those used in hydropower. However, because these machines are quite complex and therefore, understanding the cooling of these machines is not easy. The details of the air flow inside of the generator is still a field in which the academics are doing research and developing more detailed and accurate CFD studies. The downside of these CFD studies is that they often involve the use of more computational resources and time. This lack of versatility of CFD studies makes its use impossible for daily small design tests. In this area, the lumped parameter thermal models are the tools used to get fast and good enough results that allow designers to test little modifications. The present work consist of the development of a versatile lumped parameter model, implemented in Matlab/Simulink, to study the cooling of hydro-generators from a thermal and fluid perspective, contributing to future ventilation studies and research. The model created is based on a 3D network modelling of a Voith Hydro real generator, using lumped element strategy and is able to run transient simulations in a very short amount of time. The model is validated with real thermal data and is finally used to perform a parametric study of the outlets of the stator cooling ducts of the modelled generator.

O conhecimiento como fonte de criaçao de empreendimentos de negócio sociais López Alfonso, Xabier As mudanças demográficas, a liberação dos mercados, o fracasso das instituições estatais e dos governos na satisfação das necessidades sociais e os avances tecnológicos impulsaram o nascimento dos empreendimentos sociais no século vinte (Zhara, et.al., 2006; Bull, 2008; Nicholls, 2008). Esse tipo de empreendimentos se apresentam como um meio sustentável para solucionar problemáticas e desigualdades sociais, meio ambientais e financeiras entre coletivos, afastando-se dos programas sociais tradicionais que destacam por ser demais assistencialistas. O empreendimento social, entendido como projetos de negócio com profundas implicações sociais, adquiriu nos últimos anos uma relevância significativa em tudo o mundo por causa de dotar de ferramentas metodológicas e profissionais às organizações para que, de acordo a seu conhecimento e experiência, possam empreender negócios com uma perspectiva alta de sucesso e que deem solução aos problemas sociais que não estejam sendo atendidos. A importância de que os empreendimentos sociais considerem o conhecimento e a experiência das organizações está ligado com a tendência dos últimos anos do mundo empresarial, onde os ativos intangíveis constituem um dos principais fatores do sucesso presente e futuro das empresas. Hoje, ter umas instalações modernas não é uma garantia às entidades de uma posição competitiva nos mercados já que é preciso contar também com processos de inovação permanente, dispor de um pessoal com competências adequadas ao posto de trabalho, capacidade de liderança, etc. Em definitivo, o desenvolvimento de tudo um conjunto de atributos de carácter intangível estão se convertendo num dos suportes básicos para poder competir no mundo hoje. Alguns autores insistem (Drucker, 1993; Grant, 1996; Prusak, 2001) sobre o vínculo entre o conhecimento e sua gestão e o sucesso empresarial e isso levou a pensar ao autor do projeto em definir um método para organizações e comunidades para criar empreendimentos de negócio sociais baseados no conhecimentos destas.

Linear Holding for Reducing Additional Delays Experienced by Flights Subject to Ground Holding at no Extra Fuel Cost Xu, Yan; Yin, Suwan; Dalmau Codina, Ramon; Prats Menéndez, Xavier; Han, Ke This paper presents a method to implement linear holding (LH) for flights subject to ground holding in context of the upcoming Trajectory Based Operations in air transportation, aimed at reducing additional delays raised from the lack of coordination between various traffic management initiatives (TMIs) without incurring extra fuel consumption. Firstly, motivated from previous works on the features of LH to absorb delays airborne, a potential applicability of LH to compensate part of the fixed ground holding is proposed. Then, the dynamic adjustment of LH in response to TMIs associated tactical delays is formulated as a multi-stage aircraft trajectory optimization problem, addressing both pre- and post-departure additional delays. Finally, the effects of performing LH are investigated for a particular flight, discussing the changes of vertical trajectory, speed profile, fuel consumption and flight timeline, for each step of optimization. Results suggest that additional delays of 25mins in a typical case study can be totally recovered at no extra fuel cost. A notable extent of delay reduction observed from the simulation assessment further supports the benefits of LH for reducing different combinations of additional delays.

System level modelling of fuel cell driven electric cars Cerdán Codina, Albert Nowadays, climate change is an issue of major concern for the majority of the world’s society. Not just the emission of Greenhouse Gases but also the brutal pace at which fossil fuels are being consumed. Within that topic and having innovation in mind, several alternatives have risen in the automotive industry in order to address this issue such as Battery Electric Vehicles or more recently at a commercial scale, Fuel Cell Vehicles. This last technology uses hydrogen as a fuel and transforms the chemical energy generated in the reaction with oxygen in electricity able to drive an electric motor, usually a PMSM. This report will try to take an insight in this technology using different approaches. To do so, literature work will be done in order to review Hydrogen production, transportation and storage and how is now positioned as an energy resource in the world. Moreover, fuel cell technologies will be reviewed and explained as well as compared. Also, some literature work will be done in order to explain how a fuel cell vehicle operates and which are the most important elements of its drivetrain, also evaluating cost and feasibility of this kind of automotive solution. Having reviewed the current state of the art of fuel cell technologies, this report will explain how the electric drivetrain of a fuel cell vehicle can be modelled in a Simulation platform such as MATLAB/Simulink. The most important elements of the fuel cell vehicle drivetrain will be modelled (Fuel cell stack, boost converter, power systems, etc.) and will be tested to see how they behave on its own and as a part of a small vehicle fuel cell drivetrain. With the obtained results several conclusions were extracted as well as some future work pathways such as adapting the small scale model to a full power commercial vehicle model. In all, this report will try to make clear how fuel cell vehicles can be considered as a feasible alternative to substitute conventional mobility methods.

Simulació d’interaccions amb imatges mèdiques mitjançant dispositius hàptics Gaspar Fernandez, Raimon Aquest projecte parteix del treball realitzat per en Joan Fons Sànchez, “Inspecció interactiva i immersiva de models volumètrics. Aplicació diagnosi mèdica”. En aquest projecte desenvoluparem noves eines de Realitat Virtual per a la interacció amb models volumètric mèdics. D’aquesta manera es vol millorar la diagnosi mèdica i a la vegada proporcionar noves eines de formació per als estudiants. En concret, s’ha utilitzat el dispositiu hàptic Phantom Omni que ens dona un efecte d’immersió simulant el tacte amb objectes virtuals. El dispositiu hàptic utilitza uns motors i resistències per generar forces de retorn i simular la interacció de l’usuari amb l’entorn virtual. A més a més ens permet moure i orientar-nos de forma precisa en un espai 3D, tasca molt difícil amb un ratolí i teclat convencionals. El projecte s’ha desenvolupat mitjançant el motor de videojocs multi plataforma Unity de Unity Technologies. Aquest motor disposa de una interfície i un llenguatge de programació senzills, a més de diferents llibreries i plugins que faciliten la integració del dispositiu hàptic.

Hoy en día, cuando una empresa tiene un sistema de gestión de calidad (Norma ISO 9001), transmite directamente una confianza al cliente una vez se dispone a negociar con dicha empresa. Esta Norma internacional especifica los requisitos para un sistema de gestión de la calidad cuando una organización: Necesita demostrar su capacidad para proporcionar regularmente productos y servicios que satisfagan los requisitos del cliente y aspira a aumentar la satisfacción del cliente a través de la aplicación eficaz del sistema, incluidos los procesos para la mejora del sistema y el aseguramiento de la conformidad con los requisitos del cliente y los legales y reglamentarios aplicables. The waterbomb actuator: a new origami-based pneumatic soft muscle Bogunyà Piferrer, Victor This project introduces a new Pneumatic Artificial Muscle (PAM) design based on an origami structure. This artificial muscle is designed to operate at a very low range of pressures while being lightweight and compliant. It is also designed to reduce the pressure threshold and hysteresis problems present on other PAMs like the McKibben actuator. These properties are achieved thanks to a rearranging membrane based on the Waterbomb pattern, which can contract upon inflation while keeping the surface area constant. This concept has been tested using paper prototypes coated with silicone. We created thee different structures (4x8, 6x12 and 8x16 cells waterbomb actuators) from the same paper sheet (14x28cm2) and we actuated them under loads of 2, 4 and 7N. The 4x8 was discarded, but the 6x12 and 8x16 actuators contracted a maximum of 12.5% of the original length (≃10cm) while the operating pressures remained under 5Pa. We also proposed a novel approach to 3D print these actuators using a Stratasys Objet260 Connex3 3D printer. The main idea consists in creating a flat structure that can self-assemble using a technique known as 4D Printing. The pattern is printed as a flat sheet where the hinges are composites composed of an elastomeric material and shape memory polymer (SMP) fibers. These hinges can be activated through a thermomechanical process inducing a self-folding effect. Unfortunately, we were not able to verify this fabrication process due to the lack of material availability.

Consistent with Fama and French (2015) results, this research shows that value, profitability and investment risk factors play an important role in assessing the expected return of an asset. These results shed light on the relation between the risk factors in North America and the risk factors in Europe.

Scaling-up a resource efficient economy: embedding biorefineries in the industry of the future through agile supply chains de Regás Peña, Pablo During recent years the design of industry supply chain has experimented significant changes through the establishment of collaborative networks. Nowadays, there is a strong necessity for reducing costs and offering the maximum agility in terms of product availability and rapid respond in front of unanticipated changes, facts that are being achieved by implementing decentralized supply chain structures. Making reference to the article field of study, the biorefineries supply chain, some of their inefficiencies may be solved by adapting them to decentralised superstructures. Nevertheless, regarding the chemical and energy industry, these new guidelines in supply chain design are not yet full established due to the complications that may appear in terms of storage and transportation of intermediate products. There is a large amount of literature working on the objective to manage uncertainty in the biomass supply chain (Yue et al., 2014). As a concise summary, the main problems to face along the biomass supply chain consist on feedstock uncertainty, quality variability, demand variability, time dependence, storage, transportation and flexibility (Miret et al., 2016). The aim of this document is to evaluate different feasible decentralized supply chain scenarios for the particular case of biorefineries, focusing on bio-ethanol production. The new scenarios are defined to struggle against the mentioned problems and provide more agility to the biomass supply chain. The article will continue by introducing the current biorefinery concept, in order to define a starting point for the development of new scenarios. Next, a research on the state of the art of decentralised biorefineries will be presented. Right after, the KPIs selected to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the different scenarios will be introduced. Finally, a discussion of each scenario will be conducted for taking out the conclusions.

Avaluació dels pesos moleculars de la cel·lulosa Garcia Cueto, Julia L’objectiu principal d’aquest projecte és avaluar els pesos moleculars de la cel·lulosa. Per assolir l’objectiu ha estat necessària una introducció teòrica prèvia sobre aspectes relacionats amb la cel·lulosa, com és el cas dels diversos orígens, de les seves propietats, dels diferents tipus de pesos moleculars dels polímers i de les tècniques existents per avaluar-los. Seguidament, mitjançant una recerca bibliogràfica, s’explica amb detall els procediments que s’han fet servir per a dissoldre la cel·lulosa a partir de diversos dissolvents. Aquí es poden trobar les condicions de dissolució, el temps necessari, les quantitats de cada reactiu i un resum indicant els tipus de cel·lulosa que s’ha aconseguit dissoldre amb cadascun dels dissolvents utilitzats. Els mètodes que han permès avaluar els pesos moleculars en aquest projecte han estat dos: la viscositat i la cromatografia GPC. De cadascun d’ells hi ha una introducció teòrica i, posteriorment, s’especifiquen els passos seguits per a dur a terme ambdues avaluacions. A continuació es mostra un seguit de resultats. Primerament, es troben els espectres d’infraroig i de raig X que permeten caracteritzar tots els tipus de cel·lulosa que s’han utilitzat al llarg del projecte. Seguidament, es menciona quin és el millor dissolvent per dissoldre la cel·lulosa d’entre els utilitzats que, en aquest cas, ha estat el tartrat sòdic de ferro. Finalment, s’exposen els valors de pes molecular (en número, en pes i viscosimètric) de les cel·luloses obtinguts mitjançant viscositat i cromatografia GPC. En general, es pot dir que el pes molecular que s’ha obtingut del cotó és d’aproximadament 1.000.000 g/molt, mentre que el de la cel·lulosa industrial es troba al voltant de 300.000 g/mol. S’ha fet també un estudi econòmic i un estudi sobre l’impacte ambiental que provoca la realització de la part experimental del projecte. El treball conclou amb l’assoliment dels objectius: avaluar els pesos moleculars de la cel·lulosa a partir de diverses tècniques, passant per l’estudi de dissolució del polímer en qüestió.

This report is focused on implementing a heating system for Kjeller, Norway and Seville, Spain in a single family home design. This system may possibly be implemented into a research facility at either aforementioned location. Recommendations are backed by relevant research and calculations relating to heat transfer, ventilation, and a comparison between water and electrical based systems and costs.

Design and construction of a new, adaptable, test bed mounting system for an internal, combustion engine Amarki, Jamal; Da Silva, João Nuno; Pornet, Adrian; Pantelimon, Bogdan An engine test bed is a device which allows measurements on engines by making them run in a static way, which means that there is no need to use the vehicle for which the motor was made. Test beds are used in research and development departments of motor manufacturers, in order to ensure the design and the operation of prototypes before they are placed on the market. Hence, several parameters like capacity, performance, efficiency and other physical and chemical characteristics are reviewed. Reliability is also an important aspect of the development process and very specific parts of the engine can be tested for this purpose. Test beds are used for every kind of engines: diesel, gasoline, marine, agricultural, truck or car engines. In the framework of the European Project Semester 2016 in the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, we had to work on the design and the construction of a new test bed adaptable mounting system for an internal combustion engine on the engine test bench of the Polytechnic University. The objective of our project was to make some alterations to the engine test bed on the engine mounting system in order to increase the flexibility of its use by making the engine switching easier and faster. We had to work with AKKA Company, in Dacia factory, on industrial engine test bed, to get inspired about the design, but also to test the mechanical comportment of it. Our work has been divided in three steps. First, general researches about engine test bed and the different mounting systems existing. Then, we carried out measures and draws on CATIA of the existing mounting system of the university test bench, in order to make a static simulation to check the design in terms of mechanical resistance and bending. Finally, the last task consisted in doing exactly the same work as the second one, but on the test bed in Dacia plant. The report of our work during this semester will be approached through three parts, corresponding to the three steps previously explained: researches on engine test bench, university test bed study and Dacia test bed study.
